Tamara’s journey at Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Campus actually occurred MILES away from Maryland in TEXAS! If you are wondering how this is possible, her program was entirely online… which if you ask me, requires SO much dedication, focus, and determination that would be incredibly hard for me to maintain without in-person syncs and studying! Not for Tamara, though! She rocked through her masters program with flying colors, and soon, it was time to celebrate with some portraits on campus!
Back in May, Tamara proudly graduated from Johns Hopkins, earning a Master of Applied Science (MAS) in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety.
If you’ve spent any time on a university campus during the week of graduation, you know that campus becomes a whirlwind of activity— with families, visitors, and fellow graduates filling every corner. Despite the festivities, Tamara’s session remained on as scheduled because she would only be in town for a few days!
I got to meet Tamara and her boyfriend, Brian, on campus one warm, glorious evening back in May!
Brian played a crucial role during our session, not only as Tamara’s loving support system but also as an exceptional assistant. With graduation week being a bustling time on campus, Brian patiently waited in lines at iconic spots for us, ensuring a smooth and efficient session. His presence and patience in line allowed us to hop in for photos at SO many iconic spots on campus… plus, it was also pretty special to get these two together in front of the camera when he wasn’t waiting in a line of grads accompanied by family!
Now… like I said, we had a limited window for Tamara’s session. After all, she and Brian were only in town for a few days for Tamara’s graduation ceremony.
When I arrived on campus, I was surprised to find a huge grad event unfolding on the quad in front of Gilman Hall— one of the university’s most iconic spots. The setup included dazzling lights, tables, a bar, and even a stage with a podium… lovely things for a cocktail hour, but not so lovely for a grad session! Luckily, event attendees were set to arrive long after our session wrapped. While I panicked a little bit, the moment I connected with Tamara, I knew it wouldn’t be a problem! She was easy going, down to do whatever we needed to do to to get the shot, and just so excited to be on campus celebrating her graduation. Plus… every corner of Hopkins Homewood campus is beautiful, so we didn’t have a problem getting creative with locations!
Tamara’s pride in her accomplishments was palpable as she absorbed the breathtaking views that Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Campus offered. It was a truly magical experience witnessing Tamara’s realization that she had conquered the challenges of her remote academic journey as we toured campus in her graduation attire and gorgeous selection of red bottom pumps!
Completing her degree online, Tamara only been on campus a few times up to that point. The joy of exploring campus together and capturing beautiful portraits in a place that had contributed so much to her academic career created an unforgettable experience and made an already special session that much sweeter.
For over a decade, graduation sessions have held a special place in my heart as a photographer.
Watching grads truly recognize and celebrate their accomplishments as they navigate the campus in their graduation attire is an incredibly empowering experience and one that never gets old for me! Tamara’s session was no exception, with an added layer of significance due to her limited time on campus. The session became a celebration of her hard work and dedication, culminating in the proud moment of earning her master’s degree from the esteemed Johns Hopkins University.
Let us now take a walk down memory lane into the glorious spring evening that Tamara and her photographer shared as they commemorated her graduation from THE Johns Hopkins University. The images captured during this session serve as a visual testament to Tamara’s achievements, showcasing her radiant smile, badass determination, and the vibrant spirit of campus in the spring!
