2021 Thanksgiving in NYC Recap | Personal

I figure I should probably recap one holiday before we move on to the next one, yes? If you’ve been following along, you probably knew me and my fam had the opportunity to be in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

My aunt is a long time Macy’s employee and has been in the parade for years! She is a balloon pilot which basically means she walks in front of one of the big balloons and helps the handlers on the ground control the balloon’s flight overhead! (I could go on and on about how cool the intricacies of the parade are, but that’s a conversation for another time!) This was my third time in the parade, second time as a balloon handler, and it was, as always, a blast!

I finally had a chance to comb through photos from our week in NYC this week and am so excited to share a little recap of our time together with you!

We got to NYC late on Tuesday! So after settling in, it was pretty much bedtime!

Wednesday

Wednesday was spent getting organized for Thursday. Later in the day, we got to go to balloon inflation, getting a preview of our balloon, Ada Twist, a day early! We finished off the night with dinner out and then it was early to bed before Thursday.

Thursday

We had our outfits all hung up and ready to go! Our day started around 5:30AM. Report time to the parade route is pretty early, so everyone can get organized and ready to rock. We took an Uber to the starting line, and from there, it was time to hit the parade route. It’s always interesting (and fun!) to be on the parade route, and this year was no different. My favorite part always ends up being coming around the corner onto Central Park West— this year, we were the first balloon, so we came around the corner to falling confetti! It was super cool! After the parade, we came home and started prepping our Thanksgiving feast at my aunt’s place.

Friday

We had a relaxed start to Friday (and also accidentally managed to get lost in Central Park…) but headed out to see some of the sights in the evening. First up was Macy’s! We were so excited to see the displays featuring Tip Toe, and they didn’t disappoint. We then walked over to Time Square (which is always pretty cool to see!) and explored a bit in the area, seeing the Rockafeller Tree, a few days before the lights went on! From there, we walked over to see the light show at Saks 5th Avenue. This was my first time seeing the display, and it was SO beautiful!

Saturday

Saturday was, unfortunately, our last day in the city, but we made the most of it! I brought my camera with us to drop my brother off for his bus back to State College, and I’m so glad I did! We got to see a few super cool things on our walk over and stopped at Macy’s on our way back to my aunt’s! Later in the day, we took Luna to Central Park for one final walk before our ride home. Fall was out in FULL force, and it was so beautiful to take in the colors of fall in the park!
