From the start of planning, Katie and Eric, had their hearts set on a particular ambiance for their wedding day. Their shared dream was to create an intimate, cozy atmosphere where they could bask in the company of their nearest and dearest, savoring quality time with each cherished guest. More than just a grand spectacle, they yearned for a relaxed gathering that would allow them to indulge in delectable eats, custom cocktails, and breathtaking views. And there in picturesque Charlottesville, VA, proved to be the perfect embodiment of their vision – and so much more!
As I arrived at their venue, my jaw dropped— the views that the Clifton Inn has to offer are just incredible!
I just knew that their intimate Clifton Inn wedding was going to be one amazing day!
Though the summer sun’s radiant warmth was already palpable, the breathtaking views that this idyllic location had to offer were enough to make all of us want to power through the heat to enjoy the day outside! An air of anticipation filled the atmosphere as the wedding party settled in, eagerly awaiting the unfolding of the day’s enchanting events.
As Katie and Eric’s garden party vibe took shape around the property, I set to work, photographing the beautiful details that would forever tell the story of Katie and Eric’s day. From the sweet paper butterflies that tied in their reception design to the ring dish honoring their beloved cold-blooded companion, Clyde the frog, every element was a testament to the couple’s unique personalities and shared passions.
Soon, Katie slipped into her bridal gown, and in that moment, the weight of the occasion became a reality.
She was a bride, ready to embark on a new chapter with the love of her life by her side. Tears of joy glistened in her eyes, tenderly dabbed away by her bridesmaids amidst a flurry of embraces and well-wishes, as both Katie and Eric prepared for their highly-anticipated first look.
Katie and Eric shared an incredibly sweet first look just off the lawn where they would soon become husband and wife. These two opted to share private vows during their first look, something that I absolutely love seeing more and more couples incorporate on their day! After taking a moment to embrace and admire each other’s wedding-day looks, they opened their vow books and privately declared the promises they would keep for a lifetime. Happy tears, hugs, and kisses were exchanged, setting the stage for the arrival of their wedding party.
Katie and Eric’s wedding party was a carefully curated ensemble of their closest companions, each one playing a vital role in their journey to this momentous occasion.
The ladies of the bridal party donned stunning hot pink and floral dresses, carrying vibrant floral baskets instead of traditional bouquets. Katie, ever the trendsetter, also incorporated elegant parasols into the mix, providing a chic and practical way to keep the summer heat at bay.
Soon, it was time for the couple to exchange their vows and officially tie the knot.
The ceremony took place on the Clifton Inn’s picturesque Croquet Lawn, adorned with gorgeous, bright floral arrangements that added a touch of whimsy to the already enchanting setting.
Handheld fans and ice water served in eclectic glassware kept guests cool and refreshed as Katie and Eric were pronounced husband and wife by their brother-in-law, Joey, who had also been one of my grooms in 2019.
After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests parted ways momentarily, with the former enjoying the property for some romantic portraits as a newly married couple, and the latter heading inside to cool down inside and prepare for the reception festivities.
The reception was a true embodiment of Katie and Eric’s vision – an intimate and stunning affair that celebrated their love in the most personal and meaningful way.
The reception was set up just outside on the Clifton Inn’s tented back patio, where a single long table awaited the guests. Each person was seated shoulder-to-shoulder, encircling a table that was dripping with florals, colorful candles, and heirloom milk glass vases borrowed from Katie’s mom. The atmosphere was one of warmth and conviviality, with guests sipping on custom cocktails as toasts were raised and meals were savored.
Katie and Eric had expressed their excitement about incorporating lawn games into their reception, and the evening did not disappoint. As the amazing two-man-band played acoustic hits and the sunset cast its golden glow over the proceedings, guests socialized and indulged in a variety of lawn games, including croquet, bocce ball, and cornhole. The relaxed atmosphere felt like the most sophisticated of garden parties, allowing everyone to unwind and revel in each other’s company.
However, as the night wore on, the sky began to darken, and guests were ushered to the covered back porch to refill their beverages and enjoy the live music.
Suddenly, strong gusts of wind swept through, threatening to topple the tent and knocking out the power. As everyone sought shelter inside, Katie and Eric remained as cool and composed as ever, their biggest wish being to cap off the night with a rendition of “Country Roads” – a family and university tradition stemming from their West Virginia University roots.
As the rain poured down outside and the venue’s generator kicked into gear, I grabbed my phone, and the remaining group tossed their arms around each other, singing “Country Roads” at the top of their lungs. It was a moment that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the day – a celebration of love, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds that bind us together.
While the unexpected turn of events might have thrown some couples into a frenzy, Katie and Eric handled it with grace and poise.
Their ability to roll with the punches and find joy in the midst of chaos spoke volumes about their character and the strength of their partnership. Instead of allowing the situation to dampen their spirits, they chose to embrace the change, creating a memory that would forever be etched in the hearts of all who witnessed it. I was beyond impressed with how these two handled the way their reception changed on a dime.
As the newlyweds embark on their honeymoon, exploring the rich history and breathtaking vistas of Greece, one thing is certain – their love is a force to be reckoned with, something so beautiful and capable of weathering any storm that life may bring their way. (Juuuuust a little pun intended)
