Some connections in life transcend the constraints of time and distance, forging bonds that remain steadfast regardless of how long it’s been since you last crossed paths. For me, Sofía is one of those rare individuals whose presence instantly reignites a sense of familiarity and warmth, as if no time has passed at all. I guess the hours and hours of isolated arms that we put in in the DC FlyWheel studios really did it! It was my profound honor to capture the elopement of Sofía and her partner, Timmy, in the heart of Washington, DC, this past weekend – a celebration that embodied the very essence of their enduring love!
I first met Sofía years ago during our days at FlyBarre, where she was a regular client and me, an instructor, radiating her signature blend of sunshine, positivity, and a tireless work ethic. Her infectious energy and genuine kindness made her an absolute joy to be around, and it’s no surprise that she has found an equally wonderful partner in Timmy. Their Hinge-facilitated first date at a now-defunct Admo restaurant and later visit to the Lincoln Memorial for date number 2 set the stage for a love story that would culminate in a heartfelt elopement ceremony on the National Mall.
This past Saturday, Sofía, Timmy, and their closest loved ones gathered under the dome of the DC War Memorial to witness the couple’s self-officiated ceremony.
I arrived early, so I was able to be there as each group arrived. I was immediately struck by the palpable sense of love and support that surrounded the soon-to-be newlyweds’ closest people. Despite the light rain, family and friends rolled up to the National Mall with warm smiles and enthusiastic hugs, eager to celebrate this momentous occasion.
The couple shared a touching first look in the lush greenery adjacent to the memorial, their embrace and Timmy’s heartfelt exclamation – “Oh my god… we are really doing this! The day is really here!” (Or at least something like that!) – capturing the sheer joy and anticipation of their long-awaited union.
With their loved ones gathered, Sofía and her mother walked hand-in-hand around the memorial before the couple met in the middle to exchange marriage vows reflecting their unique cultural traditions. Finally, they signed the marriage license and sealed their union with a celebratory kiss, officially becoming husband and wife.
These two plan to celebrate with a larger ceremony and reception in a few years, so they chose to wait to exchange rings… a symbol that I love so much!
As the rain continued to sprinkle, the group didn’t let it dampen their spirits.
One of the couple’s friends started playing music on their phone, and a spontaneous dance party broke out, with everyone swaying and smiling to the upbeat tunes. It was a true testament to the infectious joy that permeated the entire celebration!
Next, we headed to the Jefferson Memorial, where the newlyweds were showered with congratulations and well-wishes from all the tourists they encountered along the way. This added an extra layer of sweetness to an already incredible day, as Sofía and Timmy basked in the glow of their newfound marital bliss. Their chemistry and genuine happiness were palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel honored to capture these precious moments through my lens.
After Sofía and Timmy’s elopement at the DC War Memorial and a few portraits, we bid farewell and they made their way to Mission in Dupont Circle to continue the festivities with their closest friends and family.
I can only imagine the laughter, toasts, and cherished memories that filled the air as they savored this momentous occasion surrounded by the people who mean the most to them!

From the intimate elopement at the DC War Memorial to the impromptu dance party and the celebratory gathering at Mission, every moment was a true reflection of the couple’s love and the deep connections they share with their loved ones.
